 Use the PASS method:

  • Pull the pin
  • Aim at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the handle
  • Sweep side to side

Do not attempt to fight a fire if:

  • The fire is large or spreading quickly
  • You don’t have a clear exit
  • The room is filling with smoke

In these cases, evacuate immediately and call 911.

Extinguishers should be installed in visible, accessible locations along normal paths of travel, near exits, and in areas of higher risk.

Fire extinguishers are designed for different types of fires:

  • Class A – Ordinary materials like wood, paper, and trash
  • Class B – Flammable liquids like gasoline and oil
  • Class C – Electrical equipment
  • Class K – Commercial kitchen fires involving cooking oils and grease

An ABC extinguisher is the most common type and can be used on Class A, B, and C fires. These are typically found in offices, retail spaces, and general commercial settings.
